A report on ABC NEWS “Good Morning America” studied the contents of domestic pillows and found a range of bacteria and mold inside.  Contaminants included Coliform Bacteria, Mold and Dust Mites. While the sample size was small, the findings support the view that pillow interiors are highly suited to accumulate and colonise unwanted germs and allergens.  The relevance to the hospital environment, where pillows are shared among patients and those patients are commonly immune-compromised is self apparent. Our advise is to equip with barrier pillow equipment and to clean and disinfect diligently, along with systematic auditing to reduce contamination risks. See the report here.
